What is a Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE), and how is the role different from a software engineer, solutions engineer, or consultant?
30-second answerSay your answer out loud first, then reveal.
FDE vs SWE, solutions engineer and consultant
| Role | Primary focus | Writes production code? | Typical time with customer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Product SWE | Build product features for many users | Yes | Low |
| Solutions / sales engineer | Pre-sales demos, technical validation | Demos, prototypes | Pre-sale |
| Consultant | Strategy, recommendations, process | Rarely | High, advisory |
| FDE | Make the customer successful in production with the platform | Yes, plus integrations and evals | High, hands-on |
What AI FDEs do day to day
- Run discovery with business and technical stakeholders to find high-value use cases.
- Build prototypes fast (often days), then harden them: integrations, security, evals, monitoring.
- Debug in the customer's environment (their data, their network, their identity systems).
- Translate between business language ("reduce claim handling time") and technical design.
- Report product gaps and patterns back to product and engineering.
What interviewers look for: strong engineering fundamentals, comfort with ambiguity, customer empathy, clear communication, ownership, and judgement about scope and risk.
Common mistakes
- Describing the role as "pre-sales demos" or "customer support". FDEs own outcomes, not just conversations.
