Q28IntermediateSystem design

Design how you'd integrate an LLM workflow into a customer's existing enterprise systems (e.g. Salesforce, ServiceNow, SAP).

30-second answerSay your answer out loud first, then reveal.
The user works in the Salesforce or ServiceNow UI through a native extension, which talks to an integration service that reads context from the CRM, ITSM or ERP via API, receives events, calls the AI service, logs to audit and traces, and writes back only through validated, audited actions the user confirms.

Design considerations

  1. Entry points: in-app components, workflow triggers (new ticket created), scheduled jobs.
  2. Auth: OAuth on behalf of the user (respects their permissions) vs a service account (simpler, but must be tightly scoped).
  3. Data mapping: custom fields and objects differ per customer, so configuration-driven mappings are needed.
  4. Write-backs: draft fields or suggestions, not silent updates; validation of picklist values, required fields and business rules.
  5. Limits: API rate limits (CRM APIs have daily quotas), bulk APIs for batch work.
  6. Environments: develop in their sandbox; deploy via their change process (admin approvals, release windows).
  7. Resilience: idempotent writes, dead-letter queues for failed updates, reconciliation jobs.
  8. Observability: correlate AI traces with record IDs for support and audit.

Slow is fine. Stopping is the only problem.
